Inverse Psoriasis is Normally Found in Moist Areas of the Body

The armpits, groin, under the breasts as well as skin folds near the genitals and the buttocks is where inverse psoriasis is normally found to affect patients, and it first shows up as lesions of a very red color that is not of the scale associated with plaque psoriasis. It can appear to be smooth as well as shiny and is subject to irritation resulting from rubbing and sweating because it is located in skin folds and tender areas.

People that are overweight as well as those that have deep skin folds would be more likely to have such a condition. Inverse psoriasis affects and is found in the moist areas of the body and is not an extreme form of psoriasis. It can occur in the groin, which results in dryness, redness, swelling, as well as pain.

Treatment is Difficult Because of the Sensitivity of the Affected Skin

Treating inverse psoriasis is often difficult due to the fact that the skin is sensitive in such areas. To effectively treat this condition, doctors may prescribe steroid creams and ointments, though these should be covered with plastic dressings.

Taking more steroids than is necessary or misusing steroids, especially in skin folds, will result in side effects such as thinning of the skin as well as some stretch marks. Also, doctors may need to test for infection given the fact that these areas are prone to yeast as well as fungal infections. It may also require diluted topical steroids along with medications that have anti-yeast or antifungal properties.

There are also topical agents like Dovonex, coal tar as well as anthralin that are also effective in treating inverse psoriasis, though they may also cause irritation and so need to be used with caution, and the doctor’s directions must be followed exactly. People that have severe inverse psoriasis can sometimes require systemic medications to bring the condition under control.

The FDA has approved two topical medications called Protopic and Elidel to treat eczema, which many dermatologists have also found are useful in treating psoriasis lesions in the skin fold. Another product to treat inverse psoriasis is Castellani’s Paint that is a liquid that can be painted on the part of the skin affected, and it helps dry moist lesions in the skin folds. Even powders are used in the mornings to treat this condition and so too are creams used at night.

The general consensus seems to be that this disease is hereditary and is not contagious. It can come about due to skin damage from the sun. It can also cause a lot of heartburn given the fact that there does not seem to be any known cure for it.
