Skin Care

Our skin is the largest organ we have and it performs many functions vital to our survival. It is therefore of extreme importance that we maintain a simple skin care regime to ensure it's healthiness. As well as playing an important biological role in our well being our skin is the most visible part of our body and, therefore, it is also important to have good skin care habits for the sake of our psychological well being also. This article will touch upon various elements of the broad topic and, at the bottom of this page, you will find links to other articles about skin care related topics.

Keeping our selves looking young and beautiful seems to be a modern phenomena but, in actual fact, the history of skin care and cosmetic surgery goes back several thousand years. In countries such as India and China there is a long history of medicine, with many ancient techniques still being used today. With all of the modern scientific concoctions available to us a large percentage of the population still look to natural skin care in preference. In truth many of the creams and lotions contain many of the same ingredients which are actually sourced from nature.

The skin care industry is one of the world's largest, most heavily contested, areas of business. Various new products and treatments become available each year with varying degrees of success. In the last few decades we have seen such things as Botox, microdermabrasion and chemical peels become hot topics of conversation but how effective these treatments is often wholly dependant upon two things;

1. In the case of treatments performed by others the results can depend heavily upon the skill of the beautician, cosmetic surgeon, aesthetic technician or whoever is performing the treatment. In the case of skin care or beauty products much depends upon the quality of the ingredients and the percentage of active ingredients.

2. The type, and age, of your skin and how you have looked after it.

Sometimes it is said that we get what we pay for and, in many cases, this is often true. However, when it comes to skin care, many question the validity of the claims made for certain products or treatments, especially those that appear expensive when compared to others. How often do we see the words 'scientifically proven' and then just disregard the fact? Often these statements are true but, sadly, sometimes the results have been manipulated to create a more favorable impression. Sometimes the failure of a product may, in fact, be the result of misuse, a simple mistake of using the wrong cleanser, such as using one meant for greasy skin when you actually have very dry skin, can lead to rather nasty results when, in reality, the product is really very good.

Obviously it is our own responsibility to look after our skin. However much we spend on skin care we can not move away from the fact that all the good work of perfectly effective treatments can easily become undone if we do not look after our skin properly. We could spend a small fortune on treatments such as microdermabrasion and chemical peels but if we continue to over expose our skin to the sun we will not be able to avoid the eventual damage that will be caused by such behaviour.

Education, or rather self education, is the key to success when it comes to skin care. We need to understand more about our skin, what it needs and what should be avoided, before we can hope to stand a chance against the, perfectly natural, effects of aging. The fact that we are fighting against a natural eventuality often means that we have to work with nature but this does not always mean that we use only natural skin care products.
